This is more or less Terraria 1.4, with each aspect of the game offering different routes for build diversity, avenues of progression, building options, and so much more. give you avenues for progressionīut if you want options, and a smooth experience that completes and complements Terraria for a new modding playthrough, then Thorium is absolutely the way to go. With awesome weapons, hard as balls boss fights, and absolutely amazing music by DM DOKURO, you can't go wrong with it as your first choice.
When you play a game like Terraria, what do you like out of it? The slow grind to more powerful gear, fighting against bosses with careful preparation and eventually becoming an absolute badass? If that were the case, then Calamity would without a doubt work for you. So when it comes to Calamity, it becomes a bit of a preference for what you want out of the game. Just for context, I've only gotten as far as Skeletron at the moment.

I've had it in various other mod packs before, but all of the items in Thorium were never used because I was focused on other mod packs. As for Thorium, I'm currently on my first expert playthrough with the mod and nothing else.

I never finished a full playthrough with both mods, but I managed to get to a bunch of the end game bosses in Calamity (bosses that go beyond Moon Lord). RAW Paste Data As far as Thorium and Calamity goes, I'll break it down based on my experience. If you like that in a mod, and you'd do anything to turn Terraria into the boss rush game it was meant to be, then go absolutely ham on that chance. This is why I regard Calamity as a total conversion over a simple content mod, because it puts a lot of emphasis on itself and restructures the game on its own terms. It acts as the major component of the game over everything else, even Terraria. But when it comes to Calamity, it acts more of a separate entity that asks what IT could provide for the next battle over what the game as a whole could do. Calamity even makes it a point to buff vanilla bosses through its Revengeance game mode, offering a greater challenge for players who've beaten the game thousands of times before. There's also a lot of preparation to get you battle ready, with some (if not most) of the major bosses of the mod requiring arenas, heart statues, lamps, accessories for defense or recovery, etc. Yes, there's still huge satisfaction in beating a boss with your own crafted gear on your back, especially with a lot of the bosses in Calamity. This may be fine if you want to get to fighting at less time, but that lack of balance could be a huge turn off for others who want to work hard at becoming powerful through strategy. The only thing it hopes to do is two things:Ĭalamity has much of the same thing, but it focuses a lot on its own progression and has armor sets and weapons that completely trump early game gear. It doesn't offer all the answers to a hardy boss (with Thorium adding several bosses of its own through each stage of the game), nor does it really get in the way of vanilla tiers. In Thorium, it considers itself as an option. A lot of the stuff in the mod are valuable choices to consider, but there's still a lot of vanilla gear and weapons you could use to help for your next encounter. Once you figure out what works, you'd want to do preparation and make something like potions, an arena, everything under the sun to make sure you're ready. Perhaps you like taking time working yourself through the tiers, like from iron to hellstone in pre-hardmode, and eventually find some of the specialized (but optional) armors and builds. In a way, this makes the game more fast-paced and gets you to kicking ass faster, but maybe you like the slow burn of preparation.
But HOW you want to get to that stage is a completely different matter, and the way you progress through Calamity is an experience that balances around itself rather than Terraria.
